Cleopatra
By Delia
Have you ever wondered who Cleopatra really was or what she did? I know that many people have and I was one of them. Cleopatra is one of the mysteries of Egypt and the world. But there are some things we do know. Why don’t you read along and find out!
Cleopatra was the last person to be pharaoh. She is actually Cleopatra VII. She was born in 69 or 70 BC. Cleopatra was a beautiful pharaoh who ruled at 18 years old. Her father was Ptolemy Aulete. He had two wives, and no one knows for sure which one was Cleopatra’s mother but people think it was most likely Cleopatra Tryphaena. She first ruled with her two brothers, Ptolemy XII Theos Philopator and Ptolemy XIV of Egypt, and then with her son, Ptolemy Philadelphus, for almost three decades. Later as expected she became the pharaoh alone after co-ruling with her family. She was a smart and well-educated young woman. Cleopatra spoke seven languages.
Cleopatra was first married to each of her brothers, then to Julius Caesar and finally to Mark Antony. Her marriage with Julius Caesar was the most interesting. They have gone through wars together and many other hard times along with good ones. Julius Caesar was murdered on March 44 BC. She was married to Mark Antony last. Mark Antony committed suicide after he heard a lie that Cleopatra killed herself. After Cleopatra heard this she died by allowing a snake to bite her on her chest. So in that case she also committed suicide. Cleopatra died on August 12, 31 BC.
No one knows the true history on Cleopatra and her life but historians have found many clues on her life story. There is much more that can be found about Cleopatra, but well hidden in history. We hopefully will dig it all out soon!

Walt Disney
By Noah
Walt Disney was the creator of many important theatrical characters like Mickey Mouse, Oswald the lucky Rabbit, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Minnie Mouse and many, many more. But how did he get his start? Walt Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He had four brothers named Herbert, Ray, Roy and Ruth. Then in 1906 he moved to Missouri in a small town called Marceline, to a family farm.
He went to a school called Park Elementary. The small town was where he started drawing animals and indulging his imagination. The town influenced him throughout his career and then after about four years the farm was no longer profitable. After some time,
Disney began working with a company called Eworks his first cartoon was small they were called Laugh-o-Grams. Walt and his brother thought that the Laugh-o-Grams were going to be there first big hit but unfortunately they weren't. They went bankrupt and Laugh-o-grams were dead. But that was not going to stop young pioneer Walt Disney. After that Walt moved to Hollywood and around this time Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was born. Walt and Roy tried their first cartoon. It was not a hit and the second was just and bad as the first. Then they hit the jackpot a cartoon known as Steamboat Willie. Starring, you know who, Mickey Mouse!

They kept on making cartoons until they made a full length feature film Snow White. Things like Snow White revolutionized films as it is. Then in the 1940s walt came up with more films. Cinderella, Peter pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping beauty and Alice in Wonderland. With these films he made millions. Later in the 1950s, Disneyland was born.
Walt had finally done what he wanted. He made an amazing fantasy world for adults and children. Walt operated his company for several years. Walt had so many amazing ideas, but he wasn’t the best businessman, and if you're going to run a company like disney you have to be a good businessman. By the end of his career Disney was no longer a man with a dream but a man that created a virtual fantasy world.

Hope Solo
By Madison
By Madison
“I don’t believe in happy endings.” That was what Hope Solo had said. She never had an easy life, she was always dealing with her dad's behavior, her mother’s drinking problem, and her brother who is always trying to hurt her. With no one who knew how it really felt to be in that situation she was alone with nobody to talk to. But soccer was her escape from her tough and chaotic life.
Background
Hope Solo was born on July 30, 1981, in Richland, Washington. Hope Solo never had an easy life. She had a mother (Judy), her father (Jeffrey), and her older brother (Marcus). In her life there was lots of violence, drinking, stealing, and disappointment right from the beginning. Soon, Judy (Hope’s mom) could not stand Jeffery (Hope’s father) so they got a divorce, but soon after that she got married again to a man named Glenn. Hope and her brother never really got to see their real father except when sometimes he would come to Hope’s soccer games that were nearby, but that was not often. With all that chaos, Hope still got through it. She got through it by playing soccer and that is why she is as amazing as she is today. She knows how to fight because her life was a big fighting experience.
Soccer Career
Hope Solo started playing soccer in third grade when her life started to get tough. She played as a forward but she also loved playing basketball. When Hope was in High School she realized that she wanted to play soccer full time, so she signed up for her High School soccer team and their soccer team was called the Huskies. At tryouts she realized that there was people for all positions except for goalkeeper. She made the team as a forward but really knew that she wanted to play goalkeeper so she told the coach. After a few months she was playing half in the goal and half as a forward. Soon, Hope Solo was known all around the state of Washington so she got offered a lot of things, but she never really took the offers because that would mean moving away and she did not want to do that so soon in her life. But most of the offerings were so she could play goalkeeper and not forward so she decided that she would play full time goalkeeper wherever she goes to college.
One day she got an offer to ODP (Olympic Development Program) which was Hope’s dream, and it was perfect because she would not have to move away. Hope was right when she thought she was going to go far as a goalkeeper because Hope Solo got a scholarship to the University of Washington to play as a goalkeeper. Now she was getting to be known almost everywhere. After University of Washington, Hope played on the on the U.S. Women’s soccer team after her time at college, and she loved it. Hope Solo now plays with some amazing player on the national team and her coach for the national team is Jill Ellis. Hope helped them so much being in goal. Her number is one because she is number one on the team. Hope Solo achieved so many things and blocked some of the most amazing shots. She was just amazing out there and great under pressure.
Achievements
Hope Solo got so many awards and won so many games. Hope Solo won the Golden Glove Award twice, even though it is so hard to win it once, but she pulled through to win it twice, and today she keeps it on her trophy wall. In 2008, Hope helped her team win the Olympic Gold Medal in Beijing, China. In 2015, she pushed her team to the limit and it payed off because they won the 2015 FIFA world cup and Hope saved the hardest shots on goal. It took a lot of work/determination but Hope pulled through and so did her team. Hope Solo had 18 shutouts and 325 saves so far in her career.
Off the Field
Hope Solo is known for her amazing skills in goal, but that is not all. In 2011, Hope was a contestant on dancing with the stars and she and her partner made it to the semi-finals but lost. Not only that but Hope was interested in traveling the world one day. Hope was also interested in helping people in need so when she joined the national team, she joined her teammates, Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach, in running the Chicago Marathon so they could raise money for the Seattle Humane Society. Not only that, Hope was also a part in the Game Changers, with a lot of other star athletes. Hope Solo spent countless days with children, making their dreams of meeting their sport heroes come true.
Clearly Hope Solo had some tough times, but she always managed to pull through them no matter what and even though her dad did bad things, she found in her heart to forgive him. Hope used all the bad parts in her life to keep her going and to keep her motivated, that is why she is on the U.S. Women’s soccer team today playing as their star goalkeeper. Even when there was no one cheering her on in the sidelines, that didn’t not slow her down. I think what Hope went through makes her a fighter all the way.

Julie Johnston
By Jana
Julie Beth Johnston is an important and hard working soccer player. It all starts here... hard work, effort, and determination. And she had it all! "Whatever this team needs me to do, I am willing to do it, and I want to do it to the best of my ability," she said. She was finally living her dream in 2012 as she joined her first Women's National Team. How is it like having a million (or more) people watching you, when you do something but also when you mess up, they will see every moment? Well, over one million people (girls in my case) in the world play soccer but only 23 players play on the U.S. Women's National team. It is a great honor and pleasure to play for it and Julie Johnston plays on it.
Background
Julie Johnston was born on April 6th, 1992 to David and Kristi Johnston in Mesa, Arizona. When she was a kid, soccer was “everything” to Julie. Her sister, Melanie, encouraged Julie to play soccer when she was three years old, then once she became eight years old, soccer really started meaning something to her. She played in the U-9 (under 9 years) through U-12 (under 12 years) for the Arsenal Girls Soccer Club. Then she played in the U-13 through U-19 for Sereno Soccer Club and she became captain in that team for her great efforts. Soccer was huge importance through her whole family, and in 2010 Julie got her diploma at Dobson High School in Mesa, Arizona. She didn’t play soccer in high school but volunteered to be a trainer. Julie attended Santa Clara University from 2010 to 2013, where she played for the Santa Clara Broncos. She was all caught up in soccer throughout college. She scored four winning goals and her jersey number was #2. Julie won the Bronze Ball Award for her amazing soccer skills and her effort. Julie has a really good life with lots and lots of people and family supporting her.
U.S Women's Soccer Career
Julie Johnston is pretty amazing in my eyes. Now I will show you how and why. Julie played in the Under - 20 FIFA Women's World Cup and was captain for the team in 2012. Just a few weeks before the U.S.A Women’s Soccer Team roster came out, Julie Johnston was not on the roster. She was still struggling with her self-confidence to take the jump to the full National Team. Then she stepped it up and trained harder and longer everyday and her friends and family kept supporting her until she made it all the way and took the place of Christie Rampone in 2013.
Right at the start, Julie already won four tournaments in La Manga, Spain. Then in 2015 Julie lead her team to win the FIFA World Cup. She was a very aggressive player and really tried her hardest every time she stepped on the field. Her coach is Coach Jill Ellis. Julie also has a private coach, his name is James Galanis. Whenever Team USA has a break, she and Carly Lloyd train with him. Julie Johnson has much passion for the sport and every team would be lucky to have her play for them.
Chicago Red Stars
Did you know that Julie Johnston also plays for the Chicago Red Stars with the jersey number 19? At the beginning all the U.S players which was Christen Press and Julie, missed 18 games while they played the World Cup. In 2014 Julie got selected in the first round of the 2014 NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League) College Draft by the Chicago Red Stars. She played 21 games and scored two goals and had two assists. She was also named as the 2014 NWSL Rookie of the Year.

Achievements
How is it to stand in front of about hundreds of people being given an award for how good you have played? Well, Julie Johnston has already won a few awards herself. In 2012 the U-20 national team won the World Cup in Japan, and Julie won the Bronze Ball, as the third best player on the field. Then in the 2015 Women's World Cup Julie was nominated to get the Golden Ball award for her amazing play throughout the tournament. Julie also got the state title nine times with Sereno Soccer Club.
Today
Now Julie Johnston is 23 years old and still, plays soccer on the U.S.A. Women's soccer team and Chicago Red Stars. [For the Women's national team she recently switched her number to the #8, plays center back defender (which didn’t change).] Julie only gave up 13 shots and one goal in her career so far. Julie Johnston also has a boyfriend, his name is Zach Ertz. Zach plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. They both went to Santa Clara University and meet there in 2013. Zach would go to most of Julie’s games and she goes to his. He never gave up on her and always pushed her to get better and be the best (she would do it to him, too). Julie also plays/practices at home to become stronger, mentally and physically, she runs a lot and goes to the gym (mostly with her team). She also has soccer practice almost everyday. One of Julie’s hobbies is that she likes to cook and bake. She is amazing!
Julie Johnston has a lot of talents and practices a whole lot to get better and better, she practices and practices. She is a non stop spirit. Julie started just like us (a girl with a big dream) and she put her mind to it and made it all the way. She is quite an amazing soccer player and I hope you agree with me from what you have just read. GO JULIE JOHNSTON!
