Mount Rushmore
By Mason W.
In the southeastern face of Mount Rushmore four gigantic carved sculptors of former US presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. The mountain is known as the President's Mountain. The project began in 1927 by a sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, it was finally completed in 1941. Over that time some 400 workers were doing their job in dangerous conditions removing a total of 450,000 tons of rock in order to create the enormous heads. The workers used 80,000 tons of dynamite to break down most of the rock. Everyday the workers had to travel 500 steps to get to the four faces of Mt. Rushmore. Each of the president's head reach out to 60 feet (18 meters) high. Gutzon Borglum’s original design, the four presidents were meant to be represented from the waist up, but insufficient funding brought the carving to a halt after completion of their faces. Known as the “Shrine of Democracy.”
Who is John Gutzon Borglum?
John Gutzon Borglum was born in Idaho on March 25, 1867. His parents were from Denmark. Borglum loved to draw, especially western subjects like cowboys and horses. In his teen’s John moved away from his family and went to San Francisco to study art. He traveled other places like France, England, and Spain. Borglum changed his type of art to sculpting and painting. In his sculpting he was was very interested in human faces. John worked on a marble face of Abraham Lincoln that is now in the capital building of Washington DC. He was also working on Stone Mountain in Georgia. The sculpture honors Civil War heroes.
Borglum wasn’t a good man to work with, he wanted his art the way he wanted not what other people wanted him to do. During World War I Borglum stopped on the project and later after the war he finished the project of Mt. Rushmore.
The Shrine of Democracy
On July 4, 1930, a dedication ceremony was held for the head of Washington. After workers found the stone in the original site to be too weak, they moved Jefferson’s head from the right of Washington’s to the left; the head was dedicated in August 1936, in a ceremony attended by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In September 1937, Lincoln’s head was dedicated, while the fourth and final head–that of FDR’s fifth cousin, Theodore Roosevelt–was dedicated in July 1939. Gutzon Borglum died in March 1941, and it was left to his son Lincoln to complete the final details of Mount Rushmore in time for its dedication ceremony on October 31 of that year.

Golden Gate Bridge
By Jacob La.
May 27, 1937 was the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge’s original design was a hybrid of a cantilever and suspension bridge. It was rejected. The color of the Golden Gate Bridge is called “International Orange.” The cost of the Golden Gate Bridge today would be around 1.2 billion US dollars. It uses the largest bridge cables ever made, it is long enough to “wrap” around the Earth more than 3 times at the equator.

POMPEII
By Delci
“Mother, do you hear that?” Issack said as he sat up from reading.
“No darling, and stop trying to get out of your readings!” his mother snapped at him.
“I hear it too…” whispered Launa, Isaac's young and feeble sister
“Would you like me to go take a look?”
“No Launa, you stay here. I will go look.” As he said this, Launa started coughing, and moments later he was too. He got up and stepped outside. His sister and mother were coughing violently, and he was starting to get worried. He tried to stifle his coughs but it was as if something was in the air.
“NOW ISSACK!! WHAT DID I TELL YOU??” Screamed his mother through coughs as she stormed towards him with fury.
“THIS IS THE FIFTH TIME YOU HAVE GONE OUTSIDE! YOU ARE STILL SICK! GOING OUTSIDE WILL NOT MAKE YOU ANY BETTER! FIRST IT WAS THE COLD, THEN THE HEAT, THEN YOU CLAIMED THE BIRD’S SONGS WERE ANNOYING, THEN YOU NEEDED WATER, AND NOW…” She couldn't finish her sentence because she was coughing so hard she couldn’t breathe. Suddenly, there was an earsplitting scream. Issack turned his attention back outside.
“But mother! Look!!” Launa yelled through more screams. What Issack saw made him feel weak at the knees, and extremely dizzying. His throat filled with fear as the ground started to shake.
“The volcano! It’s going to erupt! RUN!!” A voice that was caught in the wind screamed. “SAVE YOURSELVES!” Issack saw magma pour down the side of the mountain, and sputter out the top.
“TAKE LAUNA! GO NOW ISSACK!” his mother screamed at them, half crying.
Isaac's vision clouded with panic as he picked up his little sister and ran to the west side of the town, trying to find shelter. After a minute he determined it useless and sat down on one side of the street, clutching his sister tightly in his arms as he started tearing up
“Launa, I love you…”
“I love you too!” she said, as she threw her arms around his neck and cried on his shoulder, and there they waited. Only expecting death.

LIFE IN POMPEII
Pompeii was once very happy. It was a rich ancient Roman town. It was built near modern day Naples, a big city in southern Italy. Towering over this beautiful city stood Mount Vesuvius, a vast and tremendous mountain. If you lived in Pompeii, you were either wealthy or poor. Vesuvius erupted around 79 A.D. Two thousand people died as the lava came into their homes and streets like a flood in this sad and tragic event.
DURING THE ERUPTION
People fled as the earth shook, and houses crumbled to the ground. Those who stayed behind to supposedly wait it out, were soon killed by the ash-filled air. If by some miracle, anyone who survived were then suffocated by a ¨Pyroclastic Surge¨- a 100-miles-per-hour- surge of super-heated poison gas and pulverized rock as it poured down the side of the mountain, killing everything in it’s path. Though Vesuvius is considered dormant, scientists can never know for sure when it may erupt again.
REDISCOVERING POMPEII
Sixteen years after the first eruption, Vesuvius erupted again, burying Pompeii even deeper in ash. Pompeii remained mostly untouched until 1748, when a group of explorers looking for artifacts arrived in Campania, a small town fairly close to Pompeiiś remains and began to excavate the area. They found that the ash had worked as an organic preservative, and underneath it all, Pompeii was almost exactly as it had been 2,000 years before. Buildings were intact, and bodies had engraved the ground with half a mold of their final resting position.
POMPEII TODAY
Scientists have worked extremely hard to preserve this ancient city. Since the human body is completely organic, when they were being devoured by the superheated magma, their bodies made half of a mold-like engraving in the earth, allowing scientists to see the townspeople’s reactions to death before their eyes. They were also able to recreate the other half of the engraving, thus making a mold. They crafted most of the statues with plaster and let them dry. You can even visit this amazing historical city, and witness the statues clutching their children, or laying on the ground pleading to their gods for their lives.
IN THE FUTURE
How can we preserve this city? We can leave it as it is and try not to harm the environment. Pompeii is an amazing city, and we should try our best to help it stay the way it is, even as we continue to uncover it.
How can we preserve this ancient city? We can help the scientists preserve this city by not harming the environment when we visit it. Vesuvius’ ash and lava had preserved it for 2,000 years, so we should be able to keep it as it is for the time being. Will Vesuvius erupt again? Vesuvius is currently dormant but the eruption in Pompeii was extremely sudden, so there may be another eruption, but we might not know about it.

Pompeii
the sound of screaming
people frozen in horror
people covered in ash
they don’t make a dash
To frighten to move
To know that the news is true
That the mountain of fire is burning their city
Taking down trees and sticks in it’s path
Lava flows down the mountain destroying the city
The Romans call it the city of Pompeii
